Martial Arts Incorporated's Christmas Olympics.

Martial Arts Incorporated held the first ever Martial Arts Christmas Olympics in Ireland on 21st December 2008 at their Dublin 7 studio. Male and female members ranging in age from 4 to 55 took part in this special event which was in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Men and women competed in various different events including highest jump kick, most amount of punches in 60 seconds and best time on a martial arts fitness and strength circuit. The energetic spirit in all competitors was electric and they were all very well cheered on by the spectators as well as fellow competitors.

Two new M.A.I. black belts, Stephen Large and Robert Mikulic were presented with their 1st Dan certificates having completed a grueling 6 hour grade the weekend before.

The highlight of the day was the awarding of a 4th Dan black belt and certificate to senior instructor, Declan Kidd who performed an amazing display of record breaking martial arts endurance over a 6 day period.

All competitors gave it their all and left exhausted and happy. Over €7000 was raised which was more than expected due to the current economic climate. 100% of all money raised will go directly to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital.

Thank you to the following people who helped the event to run smoothly:

Video operator: Sinead Courtney
Photographers: Eddie Lawlor, Jenny Galander, Caroline Clifford
Record keeper: James Merrigan
Judges: Declan Kidd, Kiefer Crosbie, Colm O’Griobhtha, Louise Quinn, Derek Foley, Stephen Large

“Very well done to everyone. It was great to see so many M.A.I. members at the event. The competitors were great and there was a great atmosphere. I laughed non stop throughout the day. The ‘Little Ninjas’ and the ‘Kicking Kids’ particularly impressed me with the amount of press ups and burpees they managed to do in 60 seconds! The look on the adult’s faces was very funny because some knew they wouldn’t be able to beat them. It was great the way everyone cheered each other on too. I was nervous that we wouldn’t raise much for the charity due to the recession and I was delighted to find out that we had raised more than I thought. Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital is such a good cause and I was shocked to find out that they get absolutely no government funding. There are still a few sponsorship cards outstanding which we need returned to us as soon as possible so that we can make the final presentation to the hospital. Please return yours asap if you haven’t done so already. Thank you to all those who helped run the event. Thank you to the competitors for giving it a go and to the spectators for showing their support. Again, very well done to everyone. I hope that you all enjoy and have an excellent Christmas break. See you at the Dojo in 2009. Happy New Year.”
